Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is currently open to those with an early access pass, and reports suggest things aren’t going entirely smoothly. User complaints on forums, social media and comment threads suggest it’s been difficult to log in and create characters as many popular worlds are near or at capacity.

A message from director and producer Naoki Yoshida on the game’s forums confirms Square Enix has even closed basic character creation for busy servers. Fans haven’t responded positively to the MMORPG’s struggles, and were particularly infuriated by a period of maintenance during which it was unavailable altogether.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Requires 50 Hours to Complete (via Gamingbolt)

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

We already got a peek at some of the characters from the franchise that will be re-debuting in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, especially Fang who joins with Lightning in battle at some point. According to game design director Yuji Abe, it seems that there will be other characters who can join the player in battle. These additional characters will be AI-controlled, however.

Also, despite initial estimates that the game would take 20 hours to complete, it seems that some changes were made to the Japanese version. As such, time’s flow can be interrupted in the game, and it may now take close to 50 hours to complete the first time around.

Here’s What Combat Looks Like in the Remastered Final Fantasy X/X-2 (via Kotaku)

Gamescom graced us with a brand new demonstration-slash-trailer, this time featuring the remastered Final Fantasy X/X-2.

The clip, which, like last time, is a comparison video, shows us how a combat scene plays out in the two versions of Final Fantasy X—first the old, then the new. The HD version is demonstrated starting at 1:47, at which point we’re shown a glimpse of some redesigned menus, sharper, better-looking effects and textures, and there’s even a sample of the newly arranged soundtrack.

I figured the launch of FFXIV would be a little rocky – there’s no way to really know how many people are going to be logging in and how the servers are going to respond to it until it happens. There were definitely some issues while I was playing during Early Access, and it got a little frustrating at times, but I wouldn’t say I’ve been infuriated by how any of it has gone. It’s my first MMO, and I have to say I’m really enjoying it, despite whatever hiccups there have been so far.

As for Lightning Returns being so long – wasn’t it originally stated that it would take multiple playthroughs in order to get through everything? I don’t know if I’ll want to sit through 50 hours of game just to do it all over again to see everything!
