A Message from Yoshinori Kitase

by December 11, 2015 0 comments

Yoshinori Kitase has posted a message to the Square Enix blog regarding the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

In it, he specifically calls attention to how utilising a multi-part format will allow the developers to expand on and enrich Final Fantasy VII’s story.

With FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, we have the opportunity to go beyond the story, world and experience of FINAL FANTASY VII in ways we’ve always dreamed of – from the depths of Midgar to the skies above the Planet. The multi-part format enables us to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience for fans and new gamers alike…

We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you’d share our vision for what we want to deliver. The biggest reason why we haven’t done a remake until now is because it’s a massive undertaking to reconstruct FINAL FANTASY VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of FINAL FANTASY VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldn’t possibly fit into one instalment.

He also describes how fitting it all into one installment would result in a condensed version of some story segments and mentions that this is something they knew the fans wouldn’t want.

This is further clarification (from the original director of Final Fantasy VII himself) that they do not mean “episodic”, but rather a series of games (perhaps akin to the FFXIII trilogy).

Got something to say about this? Have your say here.

Comparing it to the 13 trilogy isn’t a good example, I’d have compared it to a series of movies like lord of the rings or star wars or something.

It’s episodic. No matter what pretty words you’d like to define it, it’s EPISODIC. They split it into separate sections to (a) prevent it from becoming another FFXV and actually finishing it, and (b) to avoid cutting content as doing the remake would be a bigger undertaking than most remakes.

Avoiding the term ‘episodic’ because of knee-jerk negative reactions to the term is just deluding what it actually is.

But the original FF7 had 3 discs except we didnt pay for the other 2 discs. FF XIII was different and I prefer to see FF 7 remake.
