New Mobile Final Fantasy Game on the Horizon, and We Hold the Key to Sephiroth (via Kotaku)

Airborne Brigade, the first free-to-play Final Fantasy social game to be released in English, casts players as airship pilots exploring an FF-inspired land, banding together in brigades to take on powerful bosses. As players progress through quest regions they’ll gain experience and items and equipment inspired by the popular role-playing series.

Players can pre-register for Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade at the official website, which will score them a three-month exclusive Cloud character card to summon for aid during boss fights, as well as notification as soon as the game goes live. But what’s Cloud without his arch-enemy and sometimes fan fiction lover? Enter the top secret code “Kotaku” into the referral code section of the form and you’ll secure exclusive use of the One Winged Angel.

Here’s What Makes a Final Fantasy, According to Square Enix (via Kotaku)

This last weekend in Tokyo, Square Enix held an open conference centered around its real-time tech demo, Agni’s Philosophy: Final Fantasy. While presenting the technical aspects was paramount in the design of Agni’s Philosophy (as it was meant to showcase the detail and flexibility of Square’s new Luminous Engine), its creators were adamant it feel like a Final Fantasy. But what exactly makes a Final Fantasy a “Final Fantasy”? To answer this question they put together a list of the five minimum components for a Final Fantasy.

Those five components are “magic; summoning; gorgeous beauty; refinement; change and challenge”. Ignoring the fact that they actually listed six components, we were a little surprised to see things like “story” and “character development” missing from Square Enix’s list. What would be on your list? Have your say on our forum (hat-tip: Prince Lex)
