I always wondered why you couldn’t lose in Fort Condor, it’s a pity that they don’t put it. And the dialogue where Barret admits that he attacks ShinRa more by revenge than to save the world is very important for the character and his development and it was deleted, damn translators!
Thanks for these articles, they told many interesting things about this game and is a really hard work. We are reading in Spain and all (sorry if my english is a disaster xD), we’ll wait your next articles!
I noticed that in the game’s code there were a number of rooms in the Gold Saucer there are timers that I don’t recall timers being in. Do you know how these were meant to be? Also the room that doesn’t call for the “Corel Desert” game name: I was looking in the code and I found two rooms that can lead to that room, one was the other desert and one was jail3, referred to as “Corel Prison” in the menu. Can desert1 actually be accessed from jail3, and will it have “Corel Prison” in the menu?
I have not found any text boxes related to timers, nor do I know how to detect the “clock animations” used for timers.
The only Gold Saucer field I found with anything related to “timer”, was a code group in the field “bwhlin”. It handles the special-date dialogue right before and during the FMV for Aeris, Tifa, Barret & Yuffie.
desert1 is normally accessed via jail3, yes. Access the menu and the location name will be “Corel Prison”.
However, it is possible to get to desert2, which correctly uses the location name “Corel Desert” and from THERE get to desert 1. Now the location name will be “Corel Desert”.
I have now added this fact to the commentary.
the timers aren’t in textboxes (which does make it unrelated to this article series), but if you search for opcode 38 in Makou Reactor you can find uses of timers.
