Final Fantasy VII is 30% off on Steam (via Siliconera)
PC gamers wanting to collect every-single-game during the Steam Summer Sale have a few more titles to salivate over, with Final Fantasy recently being added to the Steam catalog. But why pay full price when you can get a discount? There’s a new Green Man Gaming coupon netting a solid 30% off numerous Steam-activated games, including the excellent Final Fantasy VII for only $8.40.
You’ll need to have a Square Enix account in order to play the Steam version of the game, but the good news is SecuROM is no longer in this PC version of the game. Some extra notes on local saves for this FF7 Steam version: if you uninstall the game, your local saves will be gone, but you can easily back up the files prior to removing the game data from your computer (the save files are in the Documents > Square Enix folder). Of course, your “Cloud Saves” will be tied to your Square Enix account, so those saves aren’t going anywhere.
Environments in Lightning Returns are “90% Open” (via The Escapist)
Square Enix wants to take exploration options “a step higher” than previous Final Fantasy titles.
One of the biggest complaints many had about Final Fantasy XIII was its extreme linearity. Much of the experience took place in what amounted to a single long corridor that technically led the player to different places but allowed for little exploration. Square Enix tried to address this in Final Fantasy XIII-2, opening up the game’s environments substantially. That said, with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII-3, the company is aiming to provide even more freedom than its predecessor.
“Our games have never put too much consideration into the idea of ‘being able to go to areas that look accessible,’ so we’ve made it our goal to take that part a step higher,” Yuji Abe, design director for the Lightning Returns. “Covering 100% in those regards might be a little difficult, but I’d say that you’ll be able to go to about 90% of all visible areas.” This focus on giving players the ability to go where they please will likely resonate with the many people turned off by Final Fantasy XIII’s tightly directed narrative.

New Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Trailer (via Now Gamer)
Feast your eyes on Lightning as she explores new locations coming to Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 might not be the most anticipated Final Fantasy game of recent years, but there’s no denying it’s a looker.
This is a more action orientated Final Fantasy, but it ties into the intriguing world of Final Fantasy 13. Expect more Lightning, Snow and the usual slew of storyline twists.

I’d Totally Watch this Live Action FFVII Fan-Film (via Kotaku)
This was directed by Italian film-maker Gionata Medeot, who told me he hopes to send this teaser to producers and raise funds to turn it into an actual film.
“Aren’t you worried about Square Enix’s lawyers asking you to stop?” I asked him in an e-mail. Square shut down a fanmade Chrono Trigger project back in 2010.
“I know,” he said, “but my lady Tifa knows Hironobu Sakaguchi and when we finish the teaser we’ll send it to him and we hope to be blessed; if not we’ll put it on YouTube equally and fingers crossed.”
