Square Enix is bringing a handful of its unreleased games to Gamescom this year, including in-development adventures from its subsidiary studios and the latest entries in the Final Fantasy franchise, the company announced today.
Hands-on time will be available for Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, set to launch later this month, along with special presentations from the game’s producer and director, Naoki Yoshida. Longtime series producer Yoshinori Kitase will also be present to share more information on Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 HD Remaster, which will be available for attendees to play. Square Enix will continue its media showcase of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 with hands-on opportunities and additional presentations by producer Kitase and design director Yuji Abe.
Vistors to Square Enix’s booth will also get hands-on opportunities with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix for PlayStation 3 and Deux Ex: The Fall for iPad. Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3, both announced at E3, will be shown as part of the booth’s trailer display.

Final Fantasy XI Celebrates 11 Years with High-Level Presents(via Joystiq)
Final Fantasy XI has been running continuously for 11 years now and just released its fifth expansion earlier this year. There are only a handful of other games that can boast that sort of longevity, so it seems only reasonable that the game would do something to celebrate. And it is celebrating… by granting every player several major high-level prizes as part of its Abyssea and Atma Axtravaganza. Aside from alliteration, that should give you an idea of what the prizes entail.
Every player who does not already possess the three Abyssea add-on scenarios will receive all three free of charge. All players will also receive a free Lunar Abyssite, 11 different Atma, 100,000 cruor, and a major bonus to your traverser stone stock in Abyssea. Those who haven’t played the scenarios might be looking on with confusion, but if you have played these before you know that this is a whole lot of power for free. So don’t miss out — the event is running until October 11th, after which point you’ll just be celebrating missing out on a big giveaway.
This Is About As Close To The Original Final Fantasy As You Can Get Today (via Kotaku)
Final Fantasy starts off by asking you to make a party of four people, each of whom can pick one of six classes. There’s a rudimentary story — “go save the princess!” — and your cash reserves start off very low. Although you’ll get more money as you go on, equipment just keeps getting more and more expensive. Spells and items are always limited, and it’s very tough to revive your characters once they die. You have to be smart and conservative in order to survive each dungeon.
