Simply fascinating.
This is fucking awesome. Can’t thank you enough for sharing all this.
It’s like getting a walk through the development of the game, almost — or an alternate timeline. Truly a fun read. =)
It is strange to me, though, that SOLDIER being mobilized was foreshadowed both in the unused and used text, but never followed up on. In a remake, they really should rectify that during the mission to attack the No. 5 reactor.
This is REALLY interesting; i’ve already read something about the Cloud’s dream sequence and subsequent wake up in white field, and while it’s clear that most of this dialogues have been dropped to make the discovery of previous events more slow (in first place hiding the possibility that Sephiroth is still alive, but also avoiding to reference Cloud’s mental instability), it’s also true that the “original” Slums script looks more articulated and complete.
Final Fantasy VII sure is one of the games that look the most crippled and cutted… while some of this dialogue (the parts concerning Sephiroth) would ruin the narrative (bringing the doubt he’s still alive too soon), other parts would make for a stronger emotional link to the Avalanche and the people of the slums, bringing more pathos and more intimate feelings to the overall experience.
Something i really hope to see in the, “legendary”, remake.
Tifa Nooooo! Barret is your friend!
*reads update*
Ah….False alarm. Whew.
Meant to say before, Shademp, I love the image you edited of Tifa saying those three biggest translation errors. Witty. =P
Thank you. I’ll try to come up with similar ‘witty’ images for future articles.
I’m really enjoying these. Keep them coming!
While at work today, a realization hit me like Thor’s hammer.
I forgot to include some notes for when Love Points are affected. =P
Every time you pick dialogue option B in the unused bar counter scene, Barret’s Love Points go down by -2, so a total of -6 Love Points after picking B three times.
Also, choosing “What’s it to you?” when Johnny runs after Cloud gives Tifa +5 Love Points.
I think that’s it. Surprisingly, the unused train station scene and the Materia scene has no effect on Love Points.
Thanks for sharing this! :D…
LOLOL Tifa hates Barret, I have to make some jokes about it, or post it on Facebook XD
Comment by Trivia says it all. Both versions of the Sector 7 Slums are pretty solid. The final version is leaner (and more focused), whereas the unused stuff is slower but builds the story better. Much like the way a movie gets edited down.
I think the scene I wish had made it the most is when everyone is crowding around the TV in Johnny’s house. Not sure how I feel about the Sephiroth references. Cloud saying that he thinks he’s still alive is clearly too much. But the scene where he appears, suggesting as you mentioned, “the link between the two and the trauma experienced,” is intriguing.
Although it is sort of an obvious “clue” to his instability, there are already enough fruitcake moments pre-flashback to let the player know Cloud is a little funny. Overall, including the two scenes (giant Sephy and the truck) probably would have left the player feeling less isolated.
But then the flashback at Kalm wouldn’t have been such a surprise…like I said, it’s a matter of pacing and personal taste. 🙂
