Forget the HD remake: what Final Fantasy VII really needs is a 2D remake. Just ask Lucas Brown, an Australian web developer who is building his very own two-dimensional slice of Square’s classic role-playing game, one sprite at a time. Although he doesn’t plan to re-create every scene in FFVII, Brown says he’s remade the menu and battle systems in “excruciating detail,” and he’s hoping to have at least the first mission finished and playable in the near future.

Brown, 23, says he’s been working on this project on and off since 2008. He’s developing the “demake” in RPG Maker 2003, using a customized scripting language to painstakingly re-create every Final Fantasy VII mechanic, from enemy AI to limit breaks.

Lightning in Miq'ote costume

During E3 we broke the news about the fact that the development team of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII saw fit to enlarge the protagonist’s breasts for the third chapter of the saga. Obviously that caused quite a stir, and today during the Premium Event held in Tokyo the devs went quite a lot beyond that, giving us even more information (maybe even too much information) during the Q&A session, as reported by Famitsu.

Nobohiro Goto (Character Modeling Designer): “Yes, her chest jiggles. Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does”.

All the Bravest keychains

Final Fantasy: All the Bravest had witty and self-aware flavor text, but it really was a quick cash in for Square Enix. The iOS and Android “game” distilled Final Fantasy battle to rapidly tapping on sprites. Cameo characters like sprites of Cloud, Lightning, Terra, and Cecil are available as in app purchases, but the hero you get is random.

Now Square Enix is making merchandise specifically for the game. There are 29 keychains with the game’s different classes like warrior, black mage, white mage, sage and onion knight. These will be available at the end of September as a pack for ¥11,020 ($112).
