Sony is to issue refunds to all customers who purchased a digital copy of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn via PlayStation Store between August 27 and August 28 following ongoing issues with the game’s servers.

In an update on the EU PlayStation Blog, SCEE blog manager Fred Dutton confirmed that all Standard Edition and Collector’s Edition customers will be refunded, with the funds being placed back into their PlayStation wallet.

“In addition, the entitlements of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Standard Edition or Collector’s Edition will be reset and the title will appear again in the download list.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience,” Dutton added.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn was pulled from PlayStation Store last week following the game’s ongoing battle against server issues.

Further reports have indicated that the game will remain on PS3 user’s download lists and will be free to downloading following the refund when the game is made available again.

Where most platforms, services and games are usually better at ducking consumer complaints than they are accepting responsibility for mistakes when things go wrong, FFXIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida is stepping up and taking his lashes. Personally.

“…I would like to take the time to personally apologise once again to all those players who have been affected by the extended World login and character creation restrictions which have been in place for the past several days”, Yoshida writes on the game’s forums. “I also understand that apologies will not help you get logged in, so I would like to give you an update on the situation at hand and the various measures we are currently employing to alleviate the situation.”

After listing some of their emergency procedures, Yoshida says “The fact that we had to implement these restrictions is a direct result of my inaccurate sales and login estimates, and as producer, I must accept complete responsibility for this misstep. Each and every player who has been affected has my deepest apologies.”

Final Fantasy spinoff Theatrhythm may be about to take an encore if a new Square Enix trademark is anything to go by. As spotted by Gematsu, the Japanese mega-company registered a US trademark for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call on August 27.

The trademark itself is identified for several properties including game software and music CDs, but beyond that there’s not much to go on. The name could apply to so many things: a new game, a new platform, a revamped re-release of the 3DS and iOS game… I could go on, but I’d just be exhibiting my ravenous hunger for more Theatrhythm – reasonably priced Theathythm, mind you.
